Hi,
I'm new to the topic of backup and have so far found two useful projects. For backing data on harddisks, it seems like QuickPar or par2cmdline is the best choice.
But for CD/DVD it seems like a better choice is DVDisaster.
It seems like there are two advantages:
1. The program contains a reader interface that scans the disk. This means that no need to worry about ISO formats etc. Also, the program has "smart scan" that reads only needed portions of the disk.
2. Knowing exactly where the disk failed to read is like a "deletion" in Reed-Solomon codes and so the program should be able to fix twice as much errors.
Any thoughts or pointers are welcome

I am also very interested in this topic. Has anyone used both programs and can comment on their relative ease of use?
Can anyone recommend any other programs or techniques? I would like something that is open source and relatively streamlined.

We looked at it back in Oct 2005... look about 6 topics down.
